Choose one of the following topics to write an essay about:
Approximately 1,300 years ago, Imam Hussain (A) stood against corruption and oppression when he led a movement against Yazid’s government. However, what many fail to appreciate is that, more importantly, Imam Hussain’s (A) movement was focused on defending the Islamic values that Yazid endangered. Imam Hussain (A) fought to protect the dangers of ignorance and deviation from the principles that Prophet Muhammad relayed just decades before. Today, comparably, there are efforts threatening the Islamic values that Imam Hussain (A) fought to protect, including the family structure and dynamic. Describe one or more of the ongoing efforts/movements that threaten the Islamic family dynamic. Be sure to address how these efforts/movements are inconsistent with the familial principles that Prophet Muhammad instilled.
When Imam Hussain (A) embarked on his journey to Karbala, several members of his immediate and extended family joined him. Based on the narrations, we learn that there were many exceptional relationships amongst those present within Imam Hussain’s (A) camp (i.e., brother-brother, brother-sister, father-son, etc.). Analyze and describe the relationship that stands out most to you. How has this relationship, including the interactions that took place during the Battle of Karbala, influenced your familial relationships and/or understanding of the Islamic family structure?
